FOOD NOW. ORGANIC DEVICES OF APPLIED LINGUISTICS

Operations of subverting uses and perceptions work aside strategies of exposing categories and appearances. They result in a display of possibilities made through connections between the way things are in a common order, and the way they can be with a slight movement of the elements involved. A shift of context, a given name, a modification of logic applied.

Food, the mundane essential, although susceptible to modification and use, is autonomous and independent of critical or symbolic attachments. Its banality and perishable nature contrast with the high density of abstraction intrinsic to language. Thus, both things are entangled in the structure of the present works as part of a complex whole of relationships involving form, image, convention, context and action.

The use of the organic matter is no longer a highlight of its ephemeral condition as a metaphor for art itself, but rather an element of the exercise of art: subordinating of the commonplace to a new formulation.

Fermín Jiménez Landa uses a logic of the counterproductive and absurd, in an impractical action that is undertaken to alter the rational order of things. A subtle intervention causes a large change of perception of the way things are supposed to function. This alteration encapsulates a broader vision of the possibilities that such a logic would open up. Emphasizing what was already there, a particular use of the space is made through filling up holes in the walls created by other artists' works, installed in previous shows.

Daniel Steegmann plays with the elements of reference and representation in his piece, in which he takes a fruit and subjects it to a process that estranges it from its original form. It becomes a disguise, not so distanced from the original thing as to not be recognizable, but far enough to be seen as something entirely different.

Wilfredo Prieto reactivates the quotidian things of daily life through the use of language as a shared ground. He presents an existing thing in its physical aspect. He puts together this object with a title that encloses an idea, which doesn't have to do with the actual function or purpose of the object in the original order, but rather an idea that already has a working meaning in its own. This connection gives the object a different and specific sense: the object is both a literal translation of the idea confined in the title and the only thing making the fortuitous association possible. The exercise of Prieto's practice indicates the possibilities of subverting the conventional sense of banal things only by applying forms of language onto them (with both the intrinsic literal and social meanings they may come with), that completely change our perception, by still only referring to the object itself.

Daniel Jacoby shows how the same things embody different categories in discourse, and displays them on the same level. One element can become completely different things when operating in a different regime: an organic element, a potato; a sculpture made of potato; the synthesized form of a potato chip bag. At the same time as it points to the layers of complexity in a system such as language - Esperanto being a recent and one of the simplest languages and Tabasaran one of the most complicated ones - , the operation of representation is realized in different scales. Taking an empty signifier and a giving it a contextual sense (The Recurrent object, a 3D print of a design found online, and the sculptures that imitate it); taking the image of an object and simplifying it into geometrical shapes, becoming untraceable to is original reference (the potato chip bag); or presenting an object that only is, and doesn't stand for anything else (the potato).
